Original painiting. Acrylic, graphite and  hand painted collage papers on heavyweight watercolour paper. 
The images are of the apinting itself, a close-up detail and using in-situ applications to show it in a room setting and in a similar style of framing.

The picture is currently at the Mall Galleries in London.  It has been selected through open competition for exhibition at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours exhibition between April 14th and 23rd 2022.

‘Muster at Dusk’ is an abstracted landscape of a walk at dusk along the coast.  I wanted to capture a series of fragments from the landscape in a linear format, as an echo of the wide vistas along the East Anglian coastline.  The large gqathering of corvids (crows, rooks and jackdaws) preparing to roost by the salt marshes were particulalry spectacular and noisy!
It is based on multiple small sketches in colour and charcoal to refine, simplify and select the key elements I wanted to include in the final painiting.
 
With a limited palette of deep blue, rust and muted orange, I have used a range of marks and lines to provide areas of detail, movement and energy againt calmer, cool areas with subtle marks and contrasted saturated, vibrant colour with muted desaturated areas.  I have used the properties of acrylic paint to create multiple layers to provide texture and increase the range of marks.
I added translucent collage papers that I painted, in order to increase the depth and range of marks.  Glazes harmonise colours and different areas of the painting.
 
Different shapes and marks move your eye across, through and around the painiting, much as different lines and shapes do through the landscape.
