Fly freely is one of my pictures inspired by small groups of birds in coastal salt-marsh reed beds I visited this year.
You could hear them a long time before you could see them as they argued and jostled for the best food. When I got close they would take off in a small explosion of wings, continuing their conversations as they flew to their next feeding site.
The painting has many layers with the brighter colours of the under paintings peeking through, much like the bright pops of colour from the lichens growing on the twisted branches of the few shrubby trees bordering the reed beds.
In this picture I also wanted to capture the beautiful colours of the big skies I saw over this stunning wild landscape.
